Gesture drawings. Quick sketches referencing dramatic photos with lots of value contrast.
On Father’s Day I did this gesture drawing with wax candle, Kosher salt, rubbing alcohol, and watercolors. I also used a plastic strawberry basket and stenciled. When using the wax candle, I referenced a photo of mountains. As I worked on it, I kept turned the paper around. At first in the horizontal position I saw a city map of streets. When trying to figure out which way the final painting would sit, I turned it horizontally and saw a male head image. It reminded me of my father. The instructor had us working on different phases of development that led up to this assignment. That is what made this class so difficult for me. I didn’t always understand where the class was going! In the end I saw the process that led up to it.
